Snuggled to the west of Grass Valley and 62 miles from Sacramento is the little settlement of Rough and Ready and this is the only mining town that has seceded from the union and this date bears the ruins of its rich past. In fact, the lavish history of the republic is still performed annually in the form of a play in the county during the secession days; the last Sunday of June witnesses a grand parade in this honor. Its old structures include the Odd Fellows Hall, the blacksmith shop and the Old Toll House. This pastoral town of Rough and Ready is officially honored a ‘historic landmark’ by the Californian State and thus, is a must visit while in the county. This ghost town boasts of its colorful culture which one enjoys while visiting Rough and Ready!
