The handsome little village of Cherokee is yet another beauty of Butte County which was inhabited by the maidu Indians before the Californian Gold Rush. The village is today ranked as a ghost town and it is elevated at a level of 1306 feet above sea level. Historically, the Cherokee Indians had come down from Oklahoma to Cherokee village, following which the Welsh miners came to Cherokee. The town prospered significantly during its mining period. The village today boasts of its museum and cemetery as well as its rustic antique houses. Its annual festivals are yet other attractions that entice visitors and tourists. In the vicinity is the Sugarloaf which is a home to foxes, deer, peacocks, doves and a lot of hiking trails. There is also a famous Chinese Taoist temple nearby.
