Formerly popular as Ophir City, Oroville is the pompous county seat of Butte County. The city is located on the banks of River Feather within the Northern Sacramento Valley. Followed by Chico and Paradise, Oroville is the third largest municipality in the county. Also officially nicknamed as the ‘City of Gold’, the city was established as the navigation head of River Feather in order to supply gold miners during the Californian Gold Rush. Very interestingly, Oroville was also the home to the last ‘stone age’ Indian to come out of the wilderness into the western civilizations!
The city of Oroville is regarded as the gateway to Lake Oroville and River Feather recreational areas. In fact, Lake Oroville is the largest lake in California and was created with the construction of Oroville Dam which was the tallest earthen dam in the United States. There are a number of parks, golf courses, bike trials and horse trails that deck the city!
